A movtivational Flag to encourage growth in our Final year
Be-U-Tiful Banners
|
Project DescriptionFor this project we are focusing on what motivates us and how we can apply that into our class environment. In order to do this we have been tasked with finding one inspirational quote that speaks to us and incorporate it into a banner that will be put up around the senior common area. Finally, on the back of the flag there is a mathematical equation incorporated into a statement about what aspects of senior year we are most excited about.

My Process
To begin this project we found a series of three-to-five inspirational quotes that we could use to narrow down the one we would use in our flag. For me those five quotes were:
I wanted something relatively simple that I could manipulate into something much more complex and keep the same answer. To do this I chose the statement "What I'm most excited about this senior year is being able to spend another 180 days in the environment and with the people who have shaped me into the person I am today." With the statement I decided to manipulate the 180 into an expression that could satisfy some aspect of complex math. I began with finding that 24 x 30 = 720, which divided by 4 is equivalent to 180. To make it more complicated I turned 24 into 4! (4x3x2x1) and left it as is. When I went to my classmates for critique they suggested transforming the 4 and 30 into similarly complex ideas. After some testing I decided to turn in the 30 into radical(900) and the 4 into log10(10,000), which made the expression: 4! x radical(900)/log10(10,000). Once I finished the expression I began the artistic work for the banner. My inspiration was an image from the production of Scorsese's 1976 masterpiece Taxi Driver, where he is holding the famous pistol from the film and the album art of The Black Keys limited 2006 release Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough. Mixing the two ideas I created an early pencil draft and a final painted draft. |

Reflection
Due to the personal nature of the project, each part of the design and process that went into it has inspiration and ideas behind it that speak about me and my personality at this point in my life. As I began working on this project, I wanted to make my banner speak about my past, present, and future while still being vague enough so that it could apply itself to motivate others who can identify with it. Keeping this in mind I chose my quote because it encompasses all three parts of my life in a really meaningful way. The quote itself hints at the hardships I have had in the past with my extended family, complications with cultural readjustment, and more while being a good indicator at the work I have begun and will continue with college applications. It also hints at the future I am working towards by originating from someone in the industry I want to work in as I move forward in my life. Due to all of these things, and the overall message that all good things necessitate hard work, I felt there was no other logical choice as my motivational message to myself and to others who also feel like life has just been kicking them while there down. I hope my quote can help them stand and continue fighting, because everything worth while asks to be fought for.
