cutting patches of satin
problem of the week: 5
possible patches
Ralph Lauren is making a patchwork quilt. Each patch must come together to form his quilt. Find the amount of specific sized patches to make a specific sized quilt.
The process that I did this was creating a scale sized patch of the quilt on a graph paper and filling it with the scale sized patches that Ralph wanted. Here are some pictures of how I did this:

The work presented above are the proofs and work in solving the following problems:
1) How many 3x5 patches can Ralph get from a 17x22 piece of satin?
2) a. How many 9x10 patches can you fit in a 17x22 piece of satin?
b. How many 5x12 patches?
c. How many 10x12 patches?
3) a. How many 3x5 patches can you fit into a 4x18 piece of satin?
b.How many 3x5 patches if the satin is 8x9?
The main observation I found was that if you change the way you fit the patches you can have more or less pieces by the end and that the bigger the patches the less pieces, no matter what way you arrange them.
Overall this problem was relatively easy and only needed the Habit of looking for patterns when you fit in the patches into the satin. This was incredibly helpful when figuring out the maximum amount of patches you could fit and in what way you had to arrange them.
