Zenit
It was a quiet night during the fourth weather cycle of the moon, the stars shown in the night sky were so clear you could easily see the streaks of stardust in the galaxy. And the light emitting from the planet above was so bright there was almost no need for the lights in the village. From the balconies on the outer perimeter of the village you could see for miles, and tonight the green expanse below looked amazing. As I stand here taking in the scenery, out of the corner of my eye I saw an antiquity of a man emerge onto his balcony. I had never seen this man, but I did know who he was. Adulated by most for his prudence and his lack of debauchery he had come to be that of a myth or legend among the masses, seen as a perfect being for his actions. These actions were, unexpectedly, never spoken of and now that I saw him I realized that I didn’t, and had never, known. The only thing I did know was that years ago he was the highest elder in the camp until his beloved wife died, he then took an oath of chastity and escaped to his home. In the past few years he has only been seen on a handful of occasions, and as he grows with age the people have been growing more and more distraught because he has no descendants to carry on a legacy no one seemed to remember.
As I kept watching him I began to become more and more curious about the man until I couldn’t take it anymore. “Hello, are you by chance Zenit Tanou?” The man, taken by surprise seemed surprise by the break in the silence. “Yes, young man.” His voice echoing and resounding with an essence of sagacity. Not knowing how to ask, the words escaped my mouth before I could think, “There has been great talk of you in the village since I was a child, but no one has ever been able to tell me who you really are. If I may ask, would you kindly enlighten me?” Seemingly unfazed by the question, he turned again to look at the landscape, he took a deep breath and in a single jump flew from his balcony to mine with such facility that I seemed to forget how old he really was. When he saw my face of shock he laughed and patted my back. After several seconds he calmed down, and looked at. He sat there for some time, studying my face until he finally spoke. “You’re a presumptuous one, aren’t you? It has been many many years since someone has spoken to me so bluntly. And I can’t fathom why I found your lack of cogency so alluring. Now tell me, what have they been telling you about me out there.”
After explaining the legends surrounding him, Zenit chuckled “They paint me in the light of a god. If you want to hear my story I will have to ask you a favor, by the end of the weather cycle I will recount my memories for one final telling, but you must do one thing in return. You must accompany me on a trek to the tree of souls. There I will tell you the complete story but for tonight I will give you a basis to think of until then.” After saying this he held out his hand in agreement. It wasn’t until I took it that I noticed the radiant aura of light surrounding him. After shaking my hand, he began to tell his tale. “I come from a distant planet known only as Earth. I arrived here with a team of three allies: Contra, Nikola and Anelka. We had come in search of planets that could sustain our species. But when coming to this place, we noticed that the atmosphere was too full of hazardous gasses that would kill the members of our species, and as we explored this new land, we began to change. Two of my companions began to become more and more rapacious, making audacious decisions that began to have sumptuous effects to the mission at large. Eventually their moral compass became so shrouded that the simplest cajole of the local species would lead them to flagrant uses of their weapons and strength until the had the false sense of being astute. That was when Contra and I, the only ones not becoming impoverish as time went on, began to interfere with their actions. This lead to a dissension in the group and the death of Nikola. After that moment, Contra and I began a war against Anelka and his native followers. As the war went on, Contra and I began to gain followers until we had an army that rivaled Anelka’s. But with more time to prepare he began to conquer this moon and trump us in almost every battle, but that all changed when I came into contact with the Tree of Souls. We eventually defeated Anelka, but not without having to kill him, one of my oldest friends, a decision I still scruple over today.”
With that he fell silent and after many moments he stood up and walked to the edge of the balcony. “You’d better get ready, we start tomorrow. We have 10 days to reach the Tree of Souls and we leave at daybreak.” And with that, he jumped back onto his balcony and disappeared into his home. Taking in all that had happened, I began to pack; an adventure awaited.
